New Business - Daisy Day Designs

These past few months have been an adventure. We fizzled out of the end of the last school year. We enjoyed our summer. Mr. O turned 11. We moved. We had a visit from my mom. Miss N turned 2. We are fixing our house. We took a trip to the coast. We continue to homeschool and I have started a new business. Daisy Day Designs sells clothing and accessories that let you shine!

My Experience

My middle two boys just learned to ride their bikes at the beginning of this year. They are 5 and 8. I’m hoping that getting my daughter started on a balance bike when she is younger she will have an easier time learning to ride.

The SCRAAAM Coaster GT balance bike came with all the required tools. My husband has it assembled in less than 15 minutes.

We had gotten another brand of balance bike, but after assembling it and trying to get her on it, the seat was way to high and her feet couldn’t touch the ground. The seat on the SCRAAAM Coaster GT balance bike is able to go as low as 11.5 inches so even though she is only 20 months old she is able to get on and off it easily. Sometimes the bike falls over, but because it is so light she can stand it back up. Also, because it is so light it is easy to carry home when she gets tired of riding.

She is starting to learn by walking the bike without sitting on it. I think after a few more times she will learn to sit and push with her feet. She is currently using the smaller seat, but as she gets bigger we will change the seat to the larger padded one with the added carrying handle.

A couple other features that I like are that the tires are foam rubber so we will never get a flat. Also, there is a kick stand included so it doesn’t have to lay on the floor. Overall, this bike has lots of great features and it will grow with her over the next couple years until she is ready for a peddle bike.

Our Experience
Although my little girl can't read yet she loves looking at books. These books are nice and sturdy and just the right size for taking with us when we leave the house. Because, I will likely be reading these to her for a couple more years, I love how they rhyme and that they are entertaining! My older boys read them a couple times and were surprised to learn that some of the strange animal stories were true. I'm glad we have these to add to our home library.

My Experience
The size is just right for coloring while away from home. I like that it comes with a bag to carry and protect it. With it being spiral bound the pages easily lay flat while working on them. The one drawback is that some of the patterns are almost too complex to be able to color each space individually. Overall, the images are beautiful and the quality is excellent.

It will hold a variety of 5ml, 10ml, and 15ml bottles as well as 10ml rollers. I have room to add even more. The hinges and dividers are sturdy. I like that I can move it to different rooms easily because the lid locks in place. The included stickers, pipettes and ebook are additional benefits. The only drawback is that it takes up quite a bit of room when it is fully opened. Overall, this is an attractive box with ample storage.

Our Experience
My boys enjoy the wacky and weird, fun and frightful information that this book has. This book really grabbed their attention when they saw it. The eyes practically pop off the cover! The quick articles are excellent for my reluctant reader, because he doesn't have to commit to reading the entire book or chapter. My oldest loves to read and then tell me about his new found information. Some of our favorite sections are about animals, food and transportation. This would be an excellent choice for the 'something to read' portion of a holiday gift tradition. Overall, this is fun for all ages that enjoy learning about the amazing world we live in!

Our Experience
My oldest son loves mental puzzles like this! He breezed through the beginner puzzles. He found the intermediate puzzles a little more challenging. He also found that some of the puzzles have more than one correct answer. It is a single player game, but if your kids can cooperate they can take turns. My younger boys were able to play together. The pieces are made of hard plastic and quite sturdy. I also like that it has a bag to store the pieces. The puzzle cards are on a ring so they all stay organized. Overall, this is a great game to develop reasoning skills needed for math and science.

Our Experience
Miss N is 14 months old and having a lot of fun feeding herself, which means she gets super messy sometimes. These are better than other silicone bibs I've tried before. Because the upper portion is fabric these lay flat and don't make a huge gap at her neck. The velcro is strong enough that she can't pull it off. I also really like that they can be rolled up and secured with a button closure. This is especially helpful in keeping the rest of my bag clean after meals out of the house. They are easy to clean too. Usually I'll just wipe it down if she didn't make it too dirty, otherwise I toss it into the dishwasher and it comes out looking new. It would be nice if they also made these in girly colors, but I'm sure Miss N doesn't really care. Overall, these bibs keep my little self-feeder clean.

Our Experience
I have never used a pasty bag with tips to decorate before. I was pleasantly suprised by how easy it was. I watched a couple video tutorials and read the PDF before I started. I experimented with several of the tips. Some gave a better result then others. With practice I think I could get a majority of them to be presentable. Of course I can eat my mistakes which makes it all better. It was also easy to change the tips because the plastic couplers screw on and off. Having two bags also allows for using two different frostings without needing to clean the bag in between. I like that the PDF gives examples of the design that each tip will produce. It would be nice if the tips were labeled so I could identify which tip I was using. The silicone bags and tips were easy to clean and the hook is very handy for hanging to bag up to dry. Overall, I'll be using these for all our future birthday cupcakes!

Our Experience
Mr. O and Mr. R both had lunch bags because they would occasionally need them for school. Mr. C has never needed one, but he was feeling left out. This bag is perfect for him. His favorite color is yellow so his eyes immediately lit up. I think the robot is very cute. The zipper closure is great at keeping the contents contained. I also like that it has a shoulder strap so it is easy for him to carry. It did smell a little funny when I took it out of the bag. But this dissipated after a few days. Overall, this is a cute bag that my son really enjoys carrying for his snacks and small toys.

Our Experience

I like that Puppy Up is fun and educational. I like that there are three levels of cards so multiple skill levels can play together. The puppies are cute. However, my son thought hey were kitties. I like that it also allows my kids to explore and experiment with other objects around the house. Occasionally the trays would fall off while they were playing. They are fairly easy to reattach, but it can get frustrating for a four year old. Also, I disliked having to rip the plastic covering the pieces off the front of the box. Overall, I think this is a great game to introduce a scientific process, measurement and math.

We Survived Month One

Well, the first month of homeschooling is behind us, and we survived. Some days were better than others, but I think we all learned a lot! For Mr. R we learned that math needs to occur before lunch, otherwise he can't stay focused and will have a mini meltdown. Mr. O finished fourth grade math and is already done with 41% of fifth grade. Mr. C has been enjoying Starfall and PBS Kids. I read aloud Mr. Pudgins by Ruth Christoffer Carlsen. This was a book I remember my mother reading to me at bedtime when I was young. I'm not sure what book we will read next.

We kept doing Khan Academy for our math. We added spelling to our daily routine from here. We also squeezed in a couple field trips. One to the Oregon Zoo and another to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum to see the Spruce Goose.

This month I'd like to work on more character education, but not a 100% sure where to start. Overall, I'm glad we made the decision to homeschool and look forward to seeing what interests emerge this month.

Our Experience

All three of my boys ages 4-10 love playing this game. They enjoy the art on the cards, especially the monsters. I found the instructions to be a little unclear. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to place the upturned cards on top of each other or next to each other. We choose to play them next to each other, but I'm sure it can be done either way. We had to designate one person to be the counter (1, 2, 3, go) so that everyone turned over their cards at the same time. To start with we had to refer to the category card to know if we had a match. It is a little challenging to tell the pastries and the candies apart. My youngest son has had fun playing on his own by sorting the cards into each of the categories. I also like that this comes in a sturdy tin for storage. Also the more players you have, the more fast paced and fun it becomes! Overall, this is an excellent activity for family game night!

These bags are a great blank canvas for lots of different projects. With four kids we go to a lot of birthday parties. We have used them for gift giving. They aren't too big. The handles are sturdy. We will also be using them as party favor bags for my sons birthday. They don't have any slick coating on them so my son was able to draw on them with markers. They didn't bleed through or smear. We are also homeschooling this year so I'm sure we will come up with some craft ideas too. Overall, these are very versatile bags.

There is no shore in sight

We started homeschooling this week. Mr. O is in 5th and Mr. R is in 2nd. Mr. C is too young to be registered so we will do some Pre-K activities. He really wants to do what his brothers do so I’m going to try to modify some lessons to include him. No matter how much I could have prepared I don’t think I could ever be ready. I know I have lots of ideas of what I want us to do. But, I know we can’t to all of them at once, and I certainly don’t want to overwhelm them. So we will ramp it up over the next couple weeks. For now we will focus on math and reading. 

Making it fun by including some art time.

Our Experience
We are trying to use the WatchMinder with my oldest son. He has a tendency to get easily frustrated and have over the top reactions to seemingly minor events. I was hoping we could program reminders for him to stay calm. The difficulty is not knowing when he might need reminding. Setting the reminder too close together gets annoying and distracting. Setting it too far apart doesn't reinforce the message. It can be set at a specified time interval to repeatedly display one reminder, like 'be positive'. It can also used to schedule different reminders throughout the day. This can be rather time consuming to set. Also, I cannot figure out how to individually delete or change a reminder or scheduled item. So a couple times I had to reset the watch to it's original settings are start over. He says the watch band is comfortable. It is set on the smallest setting. So using it with an even younger child might be difficult. I found that it is something that distracts him more than helps him. We are going to keep using it and see if we can find the right setting to make it work for him. If not I think it might work for one of his younger bothers. It comes with a special charger that plugs into a wall outlet and is easy to use. I also like that it comes preloaded with multiple phrases, and it has the ability to add your own. Overall, the WatchMinder has a lot of great features that can be adapted to use with a lot of different behaviors.
